- Subject: Modem trouble with the UK phone system -- any ideas?
- Message-ID: <13213871@sourcery.han.de>

- I'm trying to track down a very mysterious problem associated with the UK
- phone system and the failure of certain east asian modems to establish proper
- data connections. So far, my information on the UK phone system is very
- scarce. I have been told that there are two companies providing
- telecommunications services, namely British Telecom and a company whose
- name I don't quite recall, I believe it was "Mercury". The services provided
- by these companies were said to be "different" in that a modem could succeed
- in establishing a proper connection on the Mercury net while it could fail to
- do the same on the BT net -- or the other way round.
- Sometimes the modems would fail to establish a connection apparently due to
- line problems, i.e. the modem would dial out to reach the remote, the remote
- would respond by picking up the line and going through the usual procedure to
- establish a communications protocol (the beeps, the noise, etc.) but the
- linkup would fail since the two modems would not be able to agree on a common
- protocol. Eventually the local modem would respond with "NO CARRIER".
- In the other case the two modems would succeed in establishing a connection,
- the local modem would respond with "CONNECT" but the data to be transmitted
- between the two of them would be garbage.
- Ok, so I thought maybe there is a need to enable the guard tone to shut down
- echo cancelling on the line but I cannot say that with or without having the
- guard tone enabled the modem would do any better or worse.
- I'm puzzled and at my wit's end. If you have any information to share how you
- get your modem to work with the UK phone system it would be greatly appreciated.
